Rectal prolapse occurs when the rectum (the last part of the large intestine) protrudes outside the anus. This condition can be uncomfortable and may affect a person’s quality of life.
Causes:
- Weakness of Pelvic Floor Muscles: Weakening of the muscles and ligaments that support the rectum can lead to prolapse.
- Chronic Constipation: Straining during bowel movements over an extended period can contribute.
- Childbirth: Women who have given birth multiple times may be at a higher risk.
- Aging: The natural aging process can lead to a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles.
- Chronic Coughing: Conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that cause persistent coughing can increase abdominal pressure.
